Memorial Book
On 2nd May 2025, peacefully in hospital ‘Fortified By The Rites Of Holy Mother Church’, Mick, aged 89 years of Clayton-le-Moors. The dearly beloved son of the late Annie and Sam Hill, loved brother of the late John, also a cherished uncle of Michelle and Duncan. Much loved and dearly missed by all his loving family and many, many friends.
Mick began his career with an apprenticeship at Accrington Nori, and went on to spend his working life as a self-employed electrician. Outside of work, Mick had a true passion for sport. In his younger years, he played both football and cricket, and that love of sport stayed with him throughout his life.
A devoted member of Lancashire Cricket Club for many years, Mick travelled the world following the England cricket team. He enjoyed unforgettable sporting trips to far-flung places like Barbados, New Zealand and Australia, often in the company of good friends Jack Simmons and Dickie Bird.
Mick also enjoyed a flutter and had a sharp eye for the horses, backing more than a few winners over the years. If he wasn’t at Coral bookmakers, he could often be found at Yates Bakery or Denman’s Electrical shop. All three were like a second home to him—though if you had to pick just one, the bookies would always come first.
Mick was a wonderful character—popular, respected, and deeply well liked. He had a twinkle in his eye and an infectious presence that always lifted your mood. His dry sense of humour ensured he was always surrounded by laughter.
He had great love for his family and friends, and treated everyone with the same warmth and kindness. Mick was inseparable from his beloved Alsatian, Dusky, who accompanied him everywhere. They were a familiar sight together, especially in Mick’s van on the way to jobs.
A well-known and much-loved figure in Clayton-le-Moors, Mick leaves behind a lasting legacy and a very special place in all our hearts.
Donations in lieu of flowers are being gratefully received in Memory of Mick on behalf of Derian House Children’s Hospice.
Mick was a very special person in our lives from when we first met him at the age of 18 when he became ready for the Sundowners group. Godfather to my youngest son and lifelong friend he will be sadly missed. Though we did loose touch over recent years he left us with many happy memories of a kind, fun loving and generous friend who could never be replaced. He had a nack of lifting you up if you were feeling down with some comment or even just a look. Rest in Peace dear friend from all of the family.
They broke the mould when they made Mick Hill! A true character in every sense of the word and a nicer, kinder man you couldn’t wish to meet. We spent many happy hours in his company both watching cricket – Lancashire – and when he did work for us. You could always call on Mick in an emergency. He will be sadly missed by many, many people. RIP Mick. X
Although Mick wasn’t actually a relative, he always seemed part of my family. Whenever I turned up my aunty and uncles and he was there, I was really and truly glad. Mick left a quiet but profound mark on me. His kindness, gentle demeanor, and subtle presence had a way of moving mountains in the hearts of those around him. I didn’t see him often but he was one of those rare people I looked up to, not for grand achievements, but for the goodness and grace he carried in every interaction. He embodied a quiet Christian faith and warmth that has stayed with me through the years. I remember him with deep fondness.
I have many fond memories of Mick over the years. You will never meet a more genuine and down to earth person with such a brilliant sense of humour. He will be truly missed by many. My deepest sympathy to his family.
Rest in Peace Mick xx
