Gordon Hargreaves

Gordon was born in Rawtenstall in 1935 and spent his early years in Haslingden. After attending Haslingden Secondary Modern School, he proudly served his national service in Egypt. Upon returning home, he worked as a cotton spinner for many years before later joining Baxenden Chemicals, then Hollands Pies, where he remained until his early retirement at 60. In 1961, Gordon married Barbara, and together they shared 63 wonderful years. They first lived in Rising Bridge, moving to Haslingden in 1984 and then settling in Clayton Le Moors in 2000. Gordon cherished family beach holidays across the UK and later enjoyed traveling throughout Europe with Barbara. A passionate football fan, he was a founder member of Rossendale Valley Junior Football Club. He also had a deep love for country and western music and embraced new technology in his retirement, especially computers.

Barbara Hargreaves

Barbara was born in Rawtenstall in 1939, attending St James primary school in Haslingden, where in later life she became a Sunday school teacher. Barbara later attended Heathland private secondary school in Accrington. After leaving school, Barbara worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at Commercial mill in Haslingden. Barbara then became an auxiliary nurse at Rossendale general hospital. Upon becoming a mother, Barbara worked from home for Karrimor, later working part time at Baxenden Chemicals and Hollands Pies. In 1979, she got her dream job as bursar at St John’s Stonefold primary school, retiring at the age of 60, moving with Gordon to Clayton le Moors. Barbara loved dancing and attended evening classes for sewing. Barbara cherished family beach holidays across the UK and later enjoyed travelling throughout Europe with Gordon.

So sad to read this. I was lucky to have Barbara looking after me many times at St John’s Stonefold Primary School and she was such a lovely lady. I remember her with great fondness and am sad I didn’t know she had passed away, as I would definitely have liked to go to both her and Gordon’s funeral. RIP to a lovely couple and my thoughts go to their lovely family.
