Obituary Notice

1947 – 2026
On Friday 11th September 2026, Doreen Scully passed away at Blackburn Hospital, aged 79.
She was the beloved daughter of the late Mark and Margaret, the dearly loved wife of Bernard, a devoted mother to Kathryn and Sharron, and a much-loved grandma to Emily, Jessica, Thomas, Jack and Shannon. She was also a proud great-grandma to little Cedar and a dearly loved friend to many.
Doreen was born and brought up in Sacriston before beginning her working life as an accounts and wages clerk. Over the years, she enjoyed many happy times through her work and community life, including dinners at the Black Witch with the Territorial Army, Huncoat Masonic Lodge, and community projects at the Canal Halfway Point and Gatty Park.
Family was always at the heart of Doreen’s life. She lovingly hand-made Kathryn’s Church Walking Day outfits, worked behind the bar at the Pioneer Working Men’s Club on Tanpits Road, and was famous within the family for her homemade Yorkshire puddings and Sunday dinners.
Her grandchildren will remember singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” with her, watching Teletubbies and Tweenies, and sharing cut-up apple from the Pat-a-Cake bowl. Doreen also enjoyed a glass of Pinot, cheese and onion pie, and had a lifelong love of musicals, especially Summer Holiday, Dirty Dancing and Joseph.
Doreen was strong-minded, caring and devoted to her family. She knew her own mind, loved deeply and leaves behind many treasured memories that will be held close by all who knew her.
A much-loved wife, mum, grandma, great-grandma and friend. Rest in peace.

For those attending the funeral Service, Doreen’s wishes are for mourners to wear bright colours and to avoid black if possible.

Donations are being greatly received in Doreen’s memory for Arthirtis UK

Although we had kept in touch, we hadn’t seen each other for 50 years (!) until last year. I am so happy that we did have our ‘catch up’ but I had hoped we could have more. She was the same lovely person I knew from back in our teens. I have such fond memories of those times.

For Doreen, my oldest friend. beginning on Empress Street with me looking after Kathryn, going onto all the Church and Sunday school activities especially the walking days. later on we became firm friends going on a memorable holiday to Prestatyn. Bern came along and I was introduced to Stuart, we then had many great times with TA and Masons for 59 years our families were intertwined and I am grateful for it all. Rest in Peace together with Bern God Bless ❤️

Dear Doreen, our much loved youngest cousin. We shared many happy times growing up in Sacriston, going to Sunday school then afterwards tea with Auntie Margaret and Uncle Mark. Lovely memories that will stay with us forever. God bless.

Doreen, my dear cousin, friend and confidante. As children we played together until distance separated us. We were bridesmaids for each other, sharing holidays, special occasions and memory-making visits. Latterly it was long telephone conversations with laughter, tears and reminiscences but to the end she remained ... my cousin, friend and confidante. Rest in peace and God bless. xx

Joan Brain
