Obituary Notice

On Friday 31st July 2026, Dave Bradbury, affectionately known as “Bradders”, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, aged 63.

Dave was the treasured husband and best friend of Andrea for more than 46 years; a devoted son to Dorothy, (who recently celebrated her 90th birthday); a much-loved father to Matthew and Ana; cousin to Rachel and Sarah, the beloved godson of Auntie Eileen (Dorothy’s schoolfriend); a cherished brother-in-law to Philip, Duncan and Melanie; a proud uncle to Meghann, Callum, Erin, Jacob, Samuel, Millie, and Daniel; godfather to Sophie and Thomas; and, in just three weeks’ time, was looking forward to becoming a grandfather to Matthew and Amy’s baby son.

Dave grew up in Knuzden and Rishton and at the age of 16, signed an indenture as an engineering apprentice at the Royal Ordnance Factory, (ROF)in Blackburn, where his godfather Frank worked, and he loved it. An exceptionally gifted engineer, he dedicated 39 years to ROF and later BAE Systems, working on explosives, Harrier and Tornado aircraft and latterly as Production Manager on the UK-US Joint Strike Fighter programme. He had graduated from the University of Warwick, taught engineering apprentices at Blackburn College, and was especially proud to hold a UK engineering patent.

A qualified skipper, Dave loved yacht sailing. He sailed around the Greek Islands on several occasions and enjoyed keeping his own boat on Rishton Reservoir and in the Lake District where he and Andrea had a static holiday home for 11 years. He built Matthew a wooden Optimist (“Oppie”) sailing boat from scratch, then went on to build four more so that other children at the club could learn to sail to. He also painstakingly restored a 1955 Series I Land Rover with Ana and was a proud member of the Land Rover Series One Club. Dave also volunteered on the committee of Pioneer ’79 Swimming Club, in Accrington, supporting Ana and her cousins through many years of county-level competitions, dealing with all the entries and where he became affectionately known as “Stato”, the statistics man.

Bell ringing has been one of Dave’s lifelong passions. Beginning at Rishton at the age of 15, he was the current Tower Captain at Whalley Parish Church, where he taught new ringers, maintained and helped restore the bells, and supported bell towers across East Lancs. He had recently returned to ringing at Rishton, helping Fr Eddie. His knowledge, patience and enthusiasm inspired others to take up the hobby he loved so dearly.

Above all, Dave will be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help anyone. Cheerful, humorous and endlessly practical, he touched the lives of so many people. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his lifelong friend and best man, Chris; the Knagg family; and their close-knit friendship group, the Rishton “Vikings”, together with their wives, affectionately known as the “Damsels”.

Dave’s funeral will take place at 11.00am on Friday 14th August 2026, at Whalley Parish Church, with the bells ringing from 10am. Please arrive early, listen to the bells and watch Dave arriving in style.

Parking on Church Lane is very limited, but additional space is available on The Sands, at Whalley Abbey, and a little further along at English Martyrs Church.

Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired, will be gratefully received in aid of the Whalley Bell Ringers. It is hoped the funds raised will provide permanent equipment to train new bell ringers, Dave’s passion.

Thank you so much Dave for welcoming Oscar and I to ring with you and the Whalley Band of bell ringers. You invited Oscar to ring for Sunday service despite never hearing him ring before and him only being 10. He loved the experience and valued your trust in him, he loves ringing in Whalley. We are so sad we didn’t get to spend more Sundays in the tower with you. But will still visit when we are in Whalley. Thank you for your warm welcome and inviting us in. We will always appreciate and remember that. Mary and Oscar (St. Paul’s, Whitley Bay).

So many beautiful tributes written and it’s no surprise, Dave was such an amazing man.
A quiet(ish) family man who had a devilish sense of humour. Dave helped everyone and anyone and could turn his hand to anything (especially with his stash of tools). We all feel honoured to have known him and that he was
a part of our lives. A true gentleman and an absolute legend. God bless. 🙏🏻🪽
Lots of love to you Andrea, Matthew Ana and family, so very sorry for your great loss.

Diane and Michael

Remembering happy times spent with you Dave and Andrea enjoying food and wine up on the terrace or walking in the Ribble Valley. Dave was such a lovely kind man who will be sadly missed by many.

One of the hardest things I've had to write. I met Dave at age 5 when we moved to live next door to him and Dorothy in Rishton. Little did I know we would become lifelong friends. Reading these tributes confirm (not that it's needed) what a truly wonderful man we have all been blessed to know. He was the closest to a brother I could ever have had and despite living overseas since 1987 he was always there when I came back home for a visit. My last visit was October 2024 and as always he was just the same kind, humorous person. He shared his passion of bell ringing with me ( I learnt a lot!) and of course his love for his family. Dave was always there...solid, reliable, funny. He has left a huge hole, I know that is such a cliché but I honestly don't know how else to express how much he has meant to me over the years. The only time he didn't speak to me was at age 7 or thereabouts when I filled my bicycle pump with muddy water and tried it out as a sprayer on Dave! He did eventually forgive me and I like to think he secretly admired my marksmanship! I'm going to miss him deeply. Aroha from New Zealand to all who knew Dave. And special Aroha to Andrea, Matthew and Ana and his mum Dorothy. Sorry I can't be there to share the remembrance and celebration of Dave's life. Deborah

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s unexpected passing . Many condolences to Andrea , Matt, Ana and Dorothy. I was at junior school with Dave in Rishton and saw him many times over the years on my trips back to Lancashire . He was a wonderful guy . Kind , funny , smart and thoroughly decent . I have many fond memories and know he will be greatly missed by many. There are no words that can capture the sadness of Dave passing on much too soon but he clearly lived a rich and fulfilling life and and leaves many wonderful legacies through his family , friends and beyond .

Sending you my deepest sympathy Andrea, Matt, Ana and Dorothy. Dave was a top bloke and neighbour who always had time to share a beer over the garden fence whilst 'working' in the garden. Will always remember him as the gifted boat builder, Mk I Landrover restorer and somewhat handy with a shotgun. He will be deeply missed. RIP Dave.

Andrea, Olivia and Emma Wyper

Sending you our deepest condolences Andrea, Matt, Ana and Dorothy and to all Dave’s friends and co-workers. Dave was such a lovely man and neighbour and will be deeply missed. RIP Dave 💐

Chris and Helen Brook

What fun we had messing about without Land Rovers.
You will be much missed Dave.
Our thoughts are with you, Andrea and family at this time.

Jan Alcock

I remember many conversations in the staff room at Westholme: Dorothy was so proud of David and Andrea,: without bragging, she talked of what a good son he was. I remember her telling us that he drove a venerable old Land Rover that was known as the Flying Shed - I smile every time I see one on the road. Andrea, my heart goes out to you and to your loved ones. With love, Jan

Although I can't be at the funeral as we are in Korea, my thoughts will be with Andrea, Matthew, Ana and all of Dave's family.

Dave and I were friends for over 50 years. From schoolboys in Rishton to regulars at Rishton Clay Shooting Club, we shared countless hours together. We progressed from shooting clays every weekend to competing nationally and, together with our friends, formed the Rishton Vikings, a bond that survives to this day.

Dave was the sort of friend everyone hopes to have, loyal, kind, funny, intelligent and always willing to help. Behind all his achievements as an engineer, sailor, bell ringer and family man, he remained the same down-to-earth person I first met all those years ago.

His passing was so sudden and unexpected that it is difficult to put into words the sense of loss we all feel. The Vikings have lost one of our own, and we have lost a dear friend.

Thank you for the memories, Dave. It was a privilege to know you, shoot alongside you, and call you my friend. You'll always be part of the Vikings, and you'll never be forgotten.

Dave was the big brother I never had. He looked after me at school (St. Wilfrids) and at the Royal Ordenance Lackburn. At that time I took some looking after. Never got annoyed with me once. I was at his wedding, he was at mine. If heaven exists it will have a bar and a pool table and Dave will be on stripes.

Well I can honestly say the short time of knowing you, through swimming, you brought many a tear of laughter to many faces. Your stories, the jokes and well just you being Dave I can honestly say you never dulled a room you, brightened it up.
God bless you and your family .
Nay you sail your yacht in tranquillity.

Such happy memories of the Series One outings but just realised that our paths may have crossed much earlier as I used to cut the grass at Whalley Parish Church when I lived in Blackburn in the late 70’s

A lovely tribute to Dave . Condolences to the family. I will never hear the church bells ringing again without thinking of Dave and how he had such an effect. Not only on bell ringing but across all walks of life. I had no idea he has had so much influence on so many lives, so many people owe him a great debt. He has been in the background on many occasion when I have had help from Andrea. Rest easy now Dave .You will be missed. 💔 Love Jean x

Uncle Dave was a special man and a brilliant uncle to me, he was intelligent, benevolent, and had a witty sense of humor. I fondly remember coming up north and Uncle Dave showed us his Land Rover before taking us through the back garden - perhaps the most elaborate use of a Land Rover I’d ever seen. Fun moments like these are what made Uncle Dave so great. We will miss him dearly.

Anne-Marie Kinsella-Calverley

A truly remarkable man, Dave you will be very sadly missed. Having just recently connected again back at St Peter and Paul’s church ringing the bells that we did for many a year from 1998!!! Thank you for all the help you have given me over the last 6 months encouraging my progress learning the ‘methods’. Rest in peace and love to Andrea and your family xx💔

Nick McNeil

A good man, a talented man ,respected and loved.

Pilar

Had the privilege of knowing Dave via Bell Ringing, from the very first 'pint' was clear what a lovely kind man he was with the most wicked sense of humour, the Christmas quiz had us all laughing the whole way through.
You'll have them all giggling up there, our loss, their gain.

Carol Duerden ringer at St Mary’s Clitheroe

Sam Brook

Debbie

I didn’t know you long Dave, but since moving to Clitheroe have very much enjoyed ringing with you and learning with you at Whalley. You will be hugely missed

Sarah & Brett

Dave,

We will always be grateful that our paths crossed through the bells at Whalley.

You taught us to ring with such patience, encouragement and good humour. You never made us feel that we should know more than we did, or that getting it wrong mattered. You simply encouraged us to have another go, and somehow, with your guidance, we did.

Your passion for ringing was infectious, but it was your kindness that we will remember most. You gave your time so generously, shared your knowledge without hesitation, and were always willing to help.

Thank you for taking us on this journey into the world of campanology, for the laughter, the learning and for being such an important part of our Whalley bellringing family.

“May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face; The rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand”

Mark Elliott

Rest in Peace Bradders.
