John's funeral service will take place at Accrington Crematorium, Burnley Road Accrington BB5 6HA
John Heslop
On 8th October 2024, in hospital, John aged 91 years of Accrington. Beloved husband of Hilary, dearly loved dad of Stephen, Gillian and Denise, dear father in law of Lynda and David, and a loving grandad and great grandad and dear brother of Joyce.
John was born in 1933 to George and Edith Heslop of Fairclough Cottage East, Balderstone. In his early years John lived at Shackerley farm in Blackburn later moving at the age of 12 with his parents to Larkhill farm in Rising bridge. John attended Mellor school and then Baxenden School leaving at the age of 14 to work on the farm.
At the age of 21 John carried out his national service with the Royal Engineers, with whom he learned to drive. During his time in the army John also became a physical training instructor.
Following his national service John lived in Church and Accrington and worked at Kearns Allen in Baxenden and later at the Brickworks in Huncoat.
John was a talented footballer and had trials for Blackburn Rovers whilst in his late teens. he was a lifelong fan of Blackburn Rovers and held a season ticket for many years. John was well known and respected and played football for local teams, Helmshore United, and in particular Whinney Hill football club who actually won every season moving from the bottom of the league to the top whilst he was playing for them. John continued to play into his mid 50’s mainly 5 a side at Accrington sports centre.
John was married to his beloved wife Hilary for over 57 years and was a devoted family man to his 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
John took up gardening when he became semi retired and continued his love of gardening for many years.
John was loved by all who knew him, he will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.
Mourners attending John’s funeral do not need to wear black.

Fantastic bloke was Johnny ‘Hez’. Had many a duel with him in football matches over the years. He was hard as iron and a fantastic player. You will be sadly missed John. RIP. Sincere condolences to all the family. Much love ❤️
