Memorial Book

Peacefully at home, with his beloved wife by his side, George passed away on 27th May 2025, aged 78 years, of Billington. The devoted and much-loved husband of Janet, dear brother of Charles and John, and the late Doreen and Ivy. A treasured brother-in-law to Catherine, Peter, Janet, Pat, Joan and the late Helen and a respected uncle, relative, and friend to many.

George spent over thirty years working as a design engineer at B & R Taylor’s in Leyland, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues. During his career, he forged many lasting friendships, and even into retirement he continued to meet regularly with former workmates—often over lunch, sharing memories and laughter. A talented craftsman, George transformed his garage into a fully equipped woodworking shop. With an eye for beauty, he could see potential in what others might call scrap, turning reclaimed wood into stunning furniture and intricate ornaments. His handcrafted pieces are proudly displayed in his own home and cherished by family and friends alike. George also had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed countless walking adventures across the UK and abroad with his wife Janet and close friend Steve. Fridays were especially meaningful, reserved for snooker and a pint with his brothers, Charles and John. The camaraderie they shared was a constant source of joy. An enthusiastic quizmaster, George was a regular at the Judge Walmsley pub and the Billington Brass Band Club. When it was his turn to set the quiz, he would spend hours carefully preparing his questions, occasionally trialled on Janet first, ensuring an entertaining and thought provoking evening for all.

George was deeply loved by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His kindness, humour, and creativity will be sorely missed but remembered with great affection.

No flowers by request. Donations, if desired, are being gratefully received in George’s memory for Cancer Research UK.

George was a dearly loved uncle to me and great uncle to my son Ethan. He will be truly missed but never forgotten with so many wonderful memories of our family gatherings to cherish remind us of him x

  • Keith says:

I have so many great memories of Uncle George – tadpoling in the woods near their house, buying my first guitar with him, trying different Rioja reds, walking to his local for the pub quiz when I stayed there for 3 months one summer (pretty sure I didn’t actually help with the quiz as his team already knew almost every answer!), and – best of all – him battling my son Ollie for the ‘chase the ace’ cards winning pot one Christmas a few years ago. I’ll always remember him playing guitar to Carly Simon and Gary Moore.

  • Steve says:

Initially a work colleague, the company had a golf society and I got to know George better as we played many courses in the local area. After joining the Holiday Property Bond I organised a few golfing trips which we probably enjoyed more for the social side than the golf itself.
Also, Janet and George joined me on numerous holidays both in the UK and abroad enjoying walks and meals in and out. With their help we even won a few quizzes.
I will miss his wit and sense of humour and our late night conversations putting the world to right helped by some liquid refreshment.

  • Catherine says:

I’ll remember my brother in law George as a kind, thoughtful man with a wonderful sense of humour. I’ll always remember the Christmas quizzes he planned with answers that had been fact checked carefully so the answers couldn’t be challenged! I still use the wooden teapot/kettle stand he made for me and I have many photographs of him laughing and enjoying the fun of family get togethers. I will miss him very much x

  • Dennis Elliman says:

    Dear George
You were a great guy and my best friend at work for many years. I can fondly remember our chats about guitars and music. You were one of the best engineers I had the pleasure to work with over the years.
My son Alex also fondly remembers the help you gave him when he started out. Typical of you.
May you rest in peace my good friend.
