Robert John Davies – Bob

On 4th November 2022, peacefully in hospital, Bob aged 88 years of Clayton-le-Dale. formerly of The Tanners, Dinckley and The Knowles Arms. The dearly loved and loving husband of Sheila, devoted and much loved dad of Andrew. Loved by so many.

Leaving school at the age of fourteen, Bob went into farming and then spent his National Service with the army as a medic. Bob met Sheila on Valentine’s Day in 1955 and they married two years later. They were a perfect match. Entering the world of hospitality, Bob and Sheila took over The Tanners and soon put it on the map, making it the go to destination for a great night out. Bob adored the banter across the bar and loved the company of young people. The place was vibrant and easy and many friendships were forged. Bob was memorable – a gentle giant, always smiling, always aware of everyone around him. You couldn’t help but love him. After eighteen wonderful years at The Tanners, Bob and Sheila then took over The Knowles Arms. Of course, all their customers followed them and within their first week, the pub went from 3 barrels to 21 barrels a week.  They made nights out exciting – fancy dress;  themed nights; bonfire parties; Christmas fun, to mention just a few. Bob and Sheila really were a fine example of community at its best. ‘Surrogate parents’ to so many. They then moved to The Spring Mill until their retirement. Retirement allowed Bob to further indulge his lifelong passion for salmon fishing and he and Sheila enjoyed many wonderful fishing holidays in Scotland over the years as well as their sunshine holidays to Malta – one of their favourite destinations. In his later years, Bob loved early doors on a Friday at The Hare and Hounds with son Andrew and their many friends. Bob lived a wonderfully happy life and leaves behind the most precious of legacies – love, laughter and happiness. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
