Memorial Book

Peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Pendleside Hospice on 3rd October 2025, Rita aged 92 years of Accrington. The devoted and loving wife of the late Alfred and the late Dennis, a loving step-mum and grandma and great-grandma.

Rita was born on 13th October 1932, to Albert and Margaret (Maggie) Roylance. Her father was a cotton weaver, and her mother ran a grocery shop—both of whom instilled in Rita a strong work ethic and a love for community. As a young girl, she regularly helped in her parents’ shop and was known for her cheerful willingness to run errands and lend a hand wherever needed.

After leaving school, Rita worked as a sewing machinist, a craft she took great pride in. In 1953, she married Dennis Parker, and though they had no children of their own, they shared a deep affection for animals—especially cats. Rita often spoke fondly of her beloved black cat, Sooty. Her nurturing spirit also extended to children, particularly babies, whom she adored.

Rita had a passion for photography, specialising in transparencies. Alongside Dennis and close friends Irene and Alfred, she was a long-standing member of the Accrington Camera Club, where many hours were spent sharing tea, cakes, and conversation about life and art.

When Dennis passed away suddenly in 2012, Rita was comforted and cared for by her dear companion, who had promised Dennis he would look after her. That promise blossomed into a loving marriage in 2013, and the two shared many happy years together, filled with companionship, laughter, and devotion.

Rita’s family circle grew over the years to include two grandchildren, Samuel and Katie who came in to her life following her marriage to Alfred  and her two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Bella, who brought her immense joy. Seeing photos of the girls or hearing their stories always made her face light up with pride and happiness.

In her later years, Rita faced great challenges with courage and grace. She was diagnosed with both Alzheimer’s and dementia during the lockdown period, yet she continued to show strength and dignity through her illness. Her devoted husband cared for her tirelessly, refusing to let her go into a care home, always saying, “What could they do that I couldn’t?”

Rita will be remembered as a loving wife, a kind friend, and a gentle soul who touched the lives of many. Her resilience, warmth, and love for family will never be forgotten.

Family flowers only please. Donations are being gratefully received in Rita’s memory on behalf of Pendleside Hospice.
