Richard James Gerard Quinn

Peacefully in hospital on 22nd March 2021, Richard aged 50 years of Great Harwood. The dearly loved and loving son of Pauline and Brian, much loved and adored brother of Jennifer, dear brother-in-law of Roy, very special ‘uncle dickie’ of Anna and Captain. Richard will be sadly missed by all his relatives and many friends.

Richard’s many interests and passions reflected his kindness, warmth, fierce intelligence and brilliant sense of humour.
Born in Liverpool, Richard’s passion for the city was matched only by his passion for the club. A talented footballer himself, he returned to his city of birth to study for a degree in Biomedical Sciences at Liverpool John Moore’s University. This fierce intelligence had already presented itself in his younger years when, as a championship chess player he represented the county nationally. As a natural sportsman, Richard could turn his hand to any sport. He enjoyed golf, tennis, squash, skiing and bowling.
Music was Richard’s lifeblood. His eclectic taste ranged from Irish folk music to Ska and everything in between. He loved going to concerts and his radio was never far away from him. Another passion was the East Lancashire Hospice where he volunteered for a number of years, based at the Warehouse. He was well loved by his fellow volunteers and he enjoyed the laughs and camaraderie there. Latterly, Richard was an NHS telephone responder during the pandemic giving comfort and support to lonely, isolated people; a testament to Richard’s natural empathy and generosity. Richard was an active member of the “Ossy Players” for several years. He starred in roles as diverse as Ambrose in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” soldier Tom in “Accrington Pals” and Manuel in “Fawlty Towers” for which he won an award for best male supporting actor.
In addition, he helped backstage and was well known for his ability to source even the most obscure props. He was also involved in the production of comedy nights.
He will be sadly missed by his fellow Thespians, Crown Green Bowlers, volunteers, scousers and all of his very many beloved friends.

Family flowers only please, donations are being received in memory of Richard on behalf of East Lancashire Hospice. To make a donation please click the ‘Make a Donation’ button at the bottom of this page.

From talking to Jennifer over the years, its always been obvious how much you enjoyed each other’s company and what a close family you are. I went to school and 6th form with Richard and also studied in Liverpool, so Richard was part of my teenage and early twenties. He was a lovely young man, kind, funny and great company. I remember a time when he gave Martina and I a guided tour of the factory in Great Harwood. I also remember many evening in the Bulls Head and ‘up the Cav’. Richard, Martina and I once won the pub quiz at the Bulls Head. I am so sad that he is no longer with us and read with live and pride the lovely community activities he took part in. I would have lived to have watched him performing on stage. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. Such a sad loss.
