Memorial Book

Suddenly but peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on 1st April 2026, Philip, aged 80 years, of Rishton. The devoted and much loved husband of Denise; loving dad of Steven and the late Paul; dear father-in-law of Nina, cherished grandad of Lara, Oliver, Halle and Leon, great-grandad of Raf, and a dear brother of Andrew, Peter and the late David, and a dear relative and friend to many.

Former business partner at CMS, Philip was dedicated to his work, making many good friends along the way. He also spent time working in previous years at Galbraith’s and Tilcon. He was a keen and passionate gardener and grower, producing the most amazing fruit and vegetables—far more than needed—so each year friends and neighbours would be treated to his tasty greens. His passion for growing led him to be a founder member and treasurer at Piggy Park Community Gardens. Phil loved to keep active, and each morning he would head off to the Dunkenhalgh for a swim, accompanied by his beloved wife Denise. He also enjoyed his daily walk and fishing trips with his son. In more recent years, Phil developed a passion for model making and could sit happily for hours creating his latest masterpiece. Each day he would get his newspaper, enjoy a quick read before settling down to complete the crosswords and puzzles.

Family flowers only please; donations are being gratefully received in Philip’s memory on behalf of Cancer Research UK.

  • Jeff Scales says:

I have fond memories of first meeting Phil in the inaugural Piggy Park meetings. I started as the paperwork guy having very little growing experience and Phil was instrumental in showing me the ropes (and some of it stuck). He was an incredibly skilled and practical man and his fingerprints and footprints are all over Piggy Park, in relation to it’s design and many of the installations which remain today.

I have very fond memories of him gently moving me out the way when it came to anything too practical which required a bit of skill – as he was a stickler for doing a job properly. But he was always very kind

Together him and Denise have looked after the polytunnel for over ten years attending almost every day over every growing season.. They continued even through the pandemic, in that time turning their attention towards growing for the food bank. He was also our treasurer since inception and was really diligent in his approach to that role,

To me (and many others) Phil was one of the loveliest grumpy old men I have met in my life and I won’t forget him

Rest in peace Phil and please don’t be quietly laughing at my continued efforts. It’ll not be the same without your gentle guidance and comments of “well good luck with that”. I’ll continue to try and learn from your expertise and tips. Gonna miss you. You’re in my prayers. God bless.

  • Flo says:

The best neighbour we could’ve ever asked for. You’ll be so missed Phil. ❤️

  • Jane, Stephen and the Holden family. says:

On the passing of our dear neighbour Phil, we send our heartfelt condolences to Denise and all the family.

Phil will be hugely missed. He was a neighbour and friend, who made everyday life life better-always passing things over the fence from the allotment, whether it was tomatoes, sweet peas, or whatever he’d been growing.
In Summer, he’d often have a sausage or two for Saffie from the barbecue.

We’ll really miss those small moments.

With love, Steve, Jane, Flo and Saffie.

  • Mick and Pauline McKeon says:

A visit to the Piggy Park this afternoon brought it home to us that Phil wasn’t there and that things would never be quite the same without him.
When we first started at PP Phil was always kind, helpful and supportive and gave us much needed advice as we were gardening newbies..
Phil was one of those people who got things done – whatever was needed he just got on with it. A lot of how PP is today and how it works is down to Phil.
Phil was always very generous with his time and help, no more so than when I had my accident. He, together with Denise, looked after our plot for the whole of the season and got us going again the year after. Phil was happy to share his produce and we would often go across to find a bunch of beetroot or sweet peas on our raised bed.
We enjoyed Phil’s company and his sharp, dry wit. Visits to PP were always better if Phil was there. He would come across and inspect our planters and we would stop and put the world to rights.
He was a lovely man and we will miss him dearly.
    God bless you Phil.
    Love Mick and Pauline.

    such sad news,
Phil was a true gent, he taught me so much over my period of working at CMS
he was a very talented man, who could turn his hand into repairing all things, then passing his knowledge on to others
thoughts with Denise and all of the family
