Peter Jelley

Peter passed away early on September 7th after a short illness at the age of 91.

Peter was a man whose glass was always half full.  A man whose positivity and ‘can do’ attitude made him an invaluable member of the community.

Peter’s great passion was music, particularly church music. Like his father before him, he became a chorister at St Marks, Mansfield, at 7 years of age and then became organist in 1947 at the age of 17. He played the organ almost every Sunday (apart from during his national service), and ran the church choir until he left the area in 1973.

When he moved to Lancashire, a county he came to love, he transferred his passion for the church and church music to the churches of Read and Simonstone and the Cathedral at Blackburn, where he was on the board of finance and a trustee for many years..

Not only did he play the organ and run the choir at Read and Simonstone churches, he also created new choirs, notably  The Readstone Singers, made up of women from the local churches and community. He was their Choir Master for 27 years.

Throughout his life, he made an enormous contribution to the diocese and the community in general. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Peter leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Pamela, son Mark, and daughter Pip, along with 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

No flowers please. Donations can be made in his memory on behalf of the Red Cross and The Children’s Society by clicking the ‘Make A Donation’ button at the bottom of this page.
