Mildred Maureen Mallalieu SRN, SCM, RCNT, DN (London)

On 2nd May, 2023 peacefully, Mildred (Milly) aged 101 years, formerly of Great Harwood. The dearly loved wife of the late Arnold, much loved mother of John and daughter in law Margaret, also a dear sister, sister in law, aunt and great aunt, who will be sadly missed.

Mildred was born in Blackpool to John and Alice Brown.  She was the ‘Big Sister’ to Hilda and the late Lilian and the late Dennis.  She attended school in town and on leaving worked initially at the Co-op Shoe Factory, where she met her future husband, Arnold.  When war broke out, Mildred worked at the Wellington Aircraft Factory in the offices and on inspection duties.  Following the war they moved to Great Harwood, where she lived until a few years ago.  In 2014 she moved to the Methodist Care Home at Ansdell, Lytham and two years later moved to Springhill Care Home at Accrington. Following the birth of their only son John, Mildred entered the Nursing profession as a Student at Accrington Victoria Hospital.  She worked there for a number of years including seven as Senior Night Sister.  She then took up Midwifery and after qualifying, worked as a District Midwife.  She later returned to general nursing at Bury General Hospital, later becoming an Area Nursing Officer before retiring. She and Arnold had enjoyed camping in their early days together graduating to trailer tenting.  Following his death, Mildred gave much of her time to helping others and animals.  She was a member of Soroptimist International, helped with WRVS ‘Meals on Wheels’, visited local care homes weekly and was a member of the Community Health Council.  Her love of animals led to her working tirelessly for a number of animal charities. During her spare time she took up drawing and painting, calligraphy, furniture restoration, reading for the local Talking Newspaper, tailoring and patchwork. She was a devout Christian and this was sustained throughout her life. Until moving to Lytham. Mildred was a regular worshipper at Trinity Methodist Church, Great Harwood.
