Margaret Sykes née Bowker
Of your charity please pray for the repose of the soul of Margaret who passed away peacefully on 21st May 2021 aged 89 years fortified by the rites of Holy Mother Church. The devoted and much loved wife of Richard, loved mum of Angela, Adrian, Stephen, Philip and Julie, a cherished grandma and great-grandma.
Margaret was born on 10th October 1931, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Cecilia Bowker. Living together with her elder sister Marie, the girls had a happy upbringing in Clitheroe. Margaret attended Notre Dame Grammer School in Blackburn. On 18th September 1954 Margaret married Richard Sykes. Richard and Margaret made their home in Whalley New Road, Blackburn and had 5 children; Angela, Adrian, Stephen, Philip and Julie. Once Julie started full time education Margaret entered into teacher training. On qualifying Margaret taught, for what was to be her whole career, at Heathfield School in Blackburn. After retiring, as Headteacher, Margaret enjoyed trips to Australia visiting her family. Both Angela, and Adrian had moved their respective families to Australia. Grandchildren; Colin, Peter, David, Liz, Luke, Kate and Kim made these Australian adventures a source of great enjoyment. At home Margaret paid keen attention to her grandchildren; Shaun, Kayla, Bethany, Max, Hannah and Henry. Margaret’s progeny now includes great grandchildren; Caiden, Izabella, Claudia, Amber, Oscar and Teddy. Margaret paid great attention to detail and was keen to see all children had an opportunity to educate and improve themselves. Margaret had a true faith, being a regular attender at mass in Holy Souls church on Whalley New Road. Margaret lived a good Christian life and was a rock for her family around her. Margaret kept high standards in her life, and those around her were able to rely on her support, always knowing she would be there if needed. Margaret’s favourite time was spent with her family; often when dishing out a delicious Sunday lunch, to an expectant posse of up to 12 relatives. Margaret would feed us till we were full and then enjoy listening to the banter; as much teasing and jesting would go on. Margaret was the hub, the catalyst of this family bond. Margaret will be greatly missed by us all.
