Lily Houlker

On 15th July 2019 at Moorhead Care Home, Lily aged 87 years of Clayton-le-Moors passed away peacefully. The dearly loved wife of the late Fred much loved mother of Mark and Andrew, mother-in-law of Rachael and Jaqui and cherished grandma of Keifer, Matthew, Robert and Reanne, a dear aunt and friend to many.

Lily was born in Clayton-le-Moors and moved to Burnley with her family as a young girl. Moving back to Clayton in her teens and after leaving school she worked as a weaver, then at Carborundum as a sales floor supervisor and finally as assistant cook at Atlas Street Day Nursery until her retirement.

In 1955, Lily married Fred who was a well-known cricketer at Enfield and also a keen fly fisherman. Once Mark and Andrew were born she loved her home and family life; all enjoying holidays in North Wales, in later years Fred and Lily visited family in Canada.

Lily loved to knit and she was a wonderful cook; everyone enjoyed her cooking especially her homemade pastry, scones and rice pudding. Sadly, Fred passed away in 1989 and shortly after Lily’s sister Hilda moved in with her. They enjoyed travelling abroad, watching soaps and game shows. Her family were her life. Lily cared for Hilda until she passed away in 2007.

In late 2008, Lily moved from Church Lane, her family home of 52 years, to Stopford Court where she lived for nine years, moving to Moorhead Care Home in March 2018 where she was cared for and loved by all the staff.

A lifelong member of All Saints’ Church, Lily was also a member of All Saints’ with St James, Mothers’ Union receiving her 25 year membership certificate in 2017.

Lily was a wonderful mum and friend, loved by everyone who knew her, she will be greatly missed.

Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in memory of Lily to North West Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.
