Joan Chippendale

Mrs Joan Chippendale of Charles St, Clayton-le Moors, passed away peacefully in hospital on Tuesday 16th February, aged 90 following a short illness.

Joan was the beloved and loving wife of the late Harold, much loved mum of Sue and the late Gill, cherished grandma of James, Jessica, Rebecca and Graham, delighted great-grandma to Jonah and a well loved friend and special ‘auntie’ to many.

Joan was born in Accrington and spent all her married life living in Clayton-le Moors in the house which she and Harold helped to build. She begin her working life at Broadley printers before becoming a weaver at Highams at Wood Nook, and returned to work at Highams as her children grew older. Joan enjoyed many activities including ballroom dancing, knitting, Tai Chi, indoor and crown green bowling and was an active member of Clayton Mother’s Club for many years.

She also loved socialising with family and friends and particularly enjoyed cruises and holidays abroad with her late husband Harold and their friends. In her later years Joan became a member of Clayton Methodist Church and the support of the church, as well as her close friends and lovely carers was greatly valued by Joan as she grew older and more frail.

Joan will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Family flowers only please, donations can be made in memory of Joan on behalf of Community Solutions via the donate button below, a charity which befriended and supported Joan through her later years.

Judith McKelvey

Sincere condolences to you all. Joan was a lovely lady I had the pleasure of knowing for many years. Along with her husband Harold and close friends Alan and Joan Ormerod, they attended the dances that my husband and I ran at Sion Church in Burnley on Wednesdays and Saturdays and The Poplar Club in Accrington on Monday afternoons. They also came on some dancing holidays that we ran. After Harold died, I used to see her at social functions at Trinity Church Great Harwood. Rest in Peace Joan. “There is no safer place to leave anyone than in the arms of The Lord.”
