Jack Anwyl (Janwyl)

Suddenly on 19th January, 2022 Jack aged 27 years of Great Harwood. The adored son of Johnny and Michelle, loved brother of Felix, cherished grandson of Jack and Lyn, the late Peter and the late Carol, a dearly loved nephew and cousin. Janwyl was also loved by all his many friends.

Jack attended St Micheal and St John’s primary school in Clitheroe before going on to study at Oak Hill College, Whalley. He was always a popular child with a close circle of good friends. Music always played a big part in Jack’s life and he fronted duo Bad Cardigan and more recently, Fighting Rhythm, who supported The Levellers on tour last year. Jack has played at many venues and has a huge following. A most talented song writer, he had an amazing command of the English language. His knowledge was vast and, like a sponge, he absorbed everything. Jack was fascinated at the wonders of nature and the magnitude of the universe. He could often be found watching his favourite presenter, Sir David Attenborough. Jack liked to voice his opinions and was known for his political rants. Janwyl lived an unconventional life and always looked forward to attending gigs and festivals. He had a great talent for creating short videos and was a former accomplished member of Burnley Youth Theatre.

Janwyl will be greatly missed by all of his family and many friends.

Please dress as Janwyl would know you.

MESSAGES for the family of Jack Anwyl (Janwyl)

Kerry

My heart is breaking for you all. He was a vibrant individual and what an amazing legacy survives him in his music and the space he occupies in the hearts of all who met him. X

Annabel Roberts

I don’t think there are any words that can convey how sorry I am for your loss, and my own, or truly describe what a fantastic person Jack was. I had the privilege of knowing him since St Michael’s and St John’s and he has been such a comfort and source of undying entertainment and friendship to me in the last 12 years, especially since we both were in Whalley a lot for the Bad Cardigan days, and both ended up living in Darwen recently. I’ll miss him tremendously, as will everyone. You must be so proud of him for his compassion, wisdom and incredible talents. I hope you are all able to heal from the loss in time, although there will always be a Jack shaped hole in all our lives, I feel honoured to have known him and been a member of his HUGE fanclub/friend group! My deepest condolences and prayers to you all x

Jackie Scott

Sending you love and strength ❤

Katherine Kearns

I feel so incredibly lucky to have worked alongside such an amazing person. No words can even begin to describe just how much he will be missed. Jack is far too loved to ever be forgotten and I will treasure every memory I have with him. Sending so much love to you all x

James Tree Ashcroft

Jack was always the one person who could light up a room with his electric sense of humour! I can recall many times where jack’s contagious personality had a whole room in laughter. Such a tragic loss for all of us friends and his family! Gone but never forgotten, love you Jack x

Nicola Hebson

Janwyl was the funniest person I have ever met. I observed him from afar for a few years until eventually our paths crossed enough that we became friends. I always loved the fact that he never questioned my weirdness and my own unconventional lifestyle, he just accepted me as a whole! We had many a conversation about taboo things and many laughs, he had such  a theatrical bonkers style humour. He was daft as a brush.  He was a true gem of a person, and an amazing musician.  I’ll always remember the times he played and sang for us at my flat, he always played and sang and danced like nobody was watching and it was always so captivating. Even though everyone’s hearts are broken right now I hope that we could all be open hearted enough to take a leaf from Jack’s book and live life with more unlimited expression through the crack forged from his departure. We are all so blessed to have known this beautiful beautiful being.  Rest in peace Jack and infinite love to all your family and friends xxx

Samuel Fittock

I didn’t know him that well, but I used to work as a bartender and served jack multiple times. One thing I remember about him was how much he smiled, it seemed whenever I’d see him he would always have a big grin on his face or having a giggle. From what I know he was a lovely person. A talented person too who I had also seen perform. He will be missed by many, a smile to remember. Rest in peace Jack. I hope you are at rest. All my love to the family grieving.

I met Jack at Oakhill through Felix, Jack always made an effort to make you laugh no matter your relationship with him and this has always stuck with me since those days. A lad that will be dearly missed.

Derek Berry

We had a few great nights but I’m gonna remember you on our last night out with Fighting Rhythm at Birmingham academy because everything about that night was you in a nutshell, it’s was chaotic, unorganised, full of mischief and fun, it was always lots of fun. Firstly you need to be thanked for taking three ordinary kids off a northern housing estates and putting them on those big stages …you did that! They asked for Gary Numan…you gave them Gary Numan. They asked for London you gave them Brixton Academy with The Levellers, you took it all in your stride as if you’d done it all before. But you hadn’t…Had You???? And then after you’d smashed it in Birmingham with your Brothers we stood in the balcony singing every line of Levelling The Land as our generation gap disappeared….There’s only one way of life Jack and that’s your own x and as you fell out of my Car after sleeping the whole way home and told me and Sean…”see ya soon and you love us”…..I really wish I’d have said “I Love You too” instead of “get out my car ya daft bugger” (or sommat like that!!!) What I wouldn’t give to tell you to behave whilst you stare at me like a kid being sent to the naughty step, you really are a one-off and the best of all of us. Gonna miss you Jack Oh & I Love You too. Derek X

Issy

I haven’t seen Jack in a few years, but that doesn’t make it any easier. Anyone who crossed paths with Jack will have a special place in their hearts for him due to his caring nature and infectious humour. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a shining star who seemed to have no dimmer – just continuously shined through. All my love. X

Simon & Sadie

So much fun, so talented, so cheeky Jack will always have place in our hearts. xx

Tessa

What an amazing friend, Janwyl made everyone feel welcome and accepted. I loved his hugs, and his ability to spot me from the other side of a crowded room or dance floor and come bounding over. So very very loved and so missed. Jack will continue to inspire me, he was a great source of support in following my dreams and talking through ideas. Sending lots of love to everyone who had the honour of knowing him. He’ll be forever in my heart x

Rhiannon

I will cherish the memories of pug talk, listening to him sing, laughing and enjoying Jack’s company. Sending you all love.

Julie Charlesworth

There were many sides to Jack, some on show for everyone to see, others hidden, Today we remember “funny, mischevious, excited, loving, guitarist, musician, song writer, political, showman. Joker, Articulate, Caring, Kind. Forever in our hearts.

Matt

Firstly, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to you all at this very sad news. I was lucky enough to share a stage with Jack on many occasions. My name is Matt and I play keyboards for Levellers. We were introduced to Jack and Tom (Randall) by our tour manager Phil who is a close family friend. He insisted that these young men were supremely talented and deserved a break. After a couple of shows it was decided that Phil could well be right and they should join us on a tour of Europe in 2015. Jack was pretty much always the last to bed and he soaked up every last drop of enjoyment on that tour. I have quite a few videos of him entertaining us all on the tour bus after a show when we would unwind and have a few beers on the journey to the next show. He was a lovely, lovely young man, full of passion and empathy and just absolutely fantastic company. Such a terrible loss. Sending you all love, light and strength. Matt. Xx

Simon

My thoughts are with you all.

Lizzie Kidd

Beautiful boy, sensitive, funny & kind. A talent from a young age, I recall his Mock Turtle song sung solo on stage at Burnley Youth Theatre, he just captivated the audience. A passionate & compassionate young man, a gifted, unique soul. Night night, sleep tight, Jack, love you (auntie) Lizzie x

Growing up with Jack at BYT was the biggest treat, not just to me but for every person that met him. He had the ability to make everybody feel special, and that you were truly seen. As a group of misfits, BYT was our home & Jack brought us all together. No matter who you were he insured you were included. You think of jack and you picture that Cheshire Cat grin and him bouncing around the room making sure everyone was smiling with him. It’s such an honour to have known him, the world will be duller without Jack

Kenya

Thinking of you all. Such a kind beautiful soul, will be greatly missed.
