Ian Paul Smith

Devoted family man

On 27th October 2018 peacefully at his home, Ian aged 66 years of Sabden.  The dearly beloved husband of Sheila, devoted dad of Russell, Helen, Clare and the late Matthew, loving grandad of Matilda and Eleanor, dear brother of Linda and dear uncle of Nadine.

Ian started his working life in Accrington as a Environmental Health Officer and then moved to work for Preston Borough Council where he went on to manage a department focussed on housing and regeneration.  Ian loved his work and was committed to improving social housing and securing homes for the homeless.

In his youth, his Lambretta was his pride and joy.  He revisited the passion once his children had left home, buying an old classic to restore.  Following his diagnosis, Ian sold his Lambretta to Mick, with whom he went on to form a wonderful friendship.  Ian originally had a complete dislike for horses but when Clare offered him a lesson at the age of 52, he became hooked.  He went on to take riding holidays with Sheila and joined the Galloping Grannies group, where he made many new friends and showed his determination by keeping riding even as MND took hold.

Despite his many interests, Sheila and his children were always his priority and he loved nothing more than spending time with his family.  He and Sheila did all their own work around the house, in the garden and on the cars, often roping the children in and Ian particularly enjoyed passing on his skills and wisdom.  He dedicated his life to educating, entertaining and nurturing those closest to him and leaves them with countless happy memories of their adventures together.

Donations may be made in memory of Ian to MNDA and Pendleside Hospice.
