Sandra Nan Foster

Died peacefully on the 18th December 2019, aged 77 years, at home with her family by her side.Dearly loved wife of Jim, much loved mother of Richard and Edward, sister to Hilary, devoted aunt to Heather, Hazel, Daniel, Laura and Graeme, and dear mother in law to Mariska. A dear friend to many.

Sandra grew up Clayton-le Moors and was educated at Accrington High School for Girls. Gaining a degree in modern languages at Manchester University and Paris-Sorbonne, Sandra worked briefly in the national press in London, Cardiff and Manchester, before taking up positions as a French teacher at Heywood and Stand Boys Grammar Schools. After marriage, she devoted herself to raising her two sons, Richard and Edward. She never gave up her talent and enthusiasm for teaching French, working as a part-time translator and private teacher, and teaching French language night classes at Accrington College.

Sandra’s main passion in life was gardening and visiting gardens. She was truly “green fingered” and boasted a formidable knowledge of flora in general. Family history also played an increasing role in later life, a not wholly unexpected turn of events given her family, the Rushtons, can be traced back in Altham’s parish records to the 16th century.

Sandra was a very sociable and fun loving person whose courage, wit and wisdom will be missed by all who knew her.

Sandra’s family would like to thank all those who supported her in her last illness.

Donations may be made in Sandra’s Memory to St James Church, Altham
