On 18th October 2026, Derek, aged 85, of Oswaldtwistle, passed away suddenly but peacefully at home.
The dearly loved and loving husband of the late Margaret, much-loved dad of Julie and Helen, dear father-in-law of David and Kevin, cherished grandad of Luke, Ross, Lottie, Jessica, Holly and Oliver, and proud great-grandad of Rex, Nellie, Willow, Hettie, Opal, Humphrey and Miles. Derek was also a much-loved relative and dear friend to many.
Derek was a devoted family man who always had a smile for everyone. Generous and kind-hearted, he had an unwavering commitment to helping his family and friends whenever they needed him. His generosity of spirit also extended to charitable work, volunteering as a marshal at breast cancer awareness MoonWalks and other events.
When his beloved wife Margaret’s health deteriorated, Derek devoted himself to caring for her, showing the same love, tenderness and dedication that had defined their married life.
Naturally sociable, Derek loved being in the company of others, whether lifelong friends or people he had only just met.
Throughout his life, Derek embraced a wide range of sports, hobbies and interests. As a boy, he enjoyed cycling and was a member of the Boys’ Brigade before joining the Accrington Pipe Band. His love of music continued when he became the drummer in a local skiffle group. In his later adult years, he even tried his hand at windsurfing. However, it was his love of cars, and most recently his treasured classic car, that became one of his greatest passions, an enthusiasm he proudly passed on to the next generation.
Derek began his working life as a carpet fitter, quickly progressing to a director’s role before eventually establishing his own company, which he ran until his retirement. One of his proudest professional achievements was fitting a carpet in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. It was a story he delighted in telling time and again, often producing a photograph of himself there, despite photography being forbidden!
Derek joined the Freemasons in 1970 and remained a dedicated member of Rossendale Forest and Amity. He served twice as Worshipful Master and was a Past Provincial Grand Officer.
Derek was a proud, kind and much-loved gentleman whose warmth, generosity and devotion to those around him will always be remembered.
Reunited with his beloved Margaret. Remembered with love, today and always.
